Our Story

During the 2010s, two mega-trends combined to transform business: The rapid shift to online sales and the digitalization of Sales and Marketing. An unprecedented amount of customer behavior data became available to commercial teams, fundamentally reinventing their operation.

And yet, even today, 80% of commerce still takes place offline.

So we set ourselves a challenge: Can we enable bricks-and-mortar companies to transform their business, through the same data and analytics that online businesses now take for granted? Can we also empower offline businesses to interact with their customers at the right moment at the right time, on- and off-line?

We asked ourselves what this would mean in practice:

  • Track and visualize customer behavior: What are the main trajectories customers follow? Where do they spend most of their time?

  • Understand the drivers of sales: What is the optimal number of employees to service customers in every area? Are the marketing campaigns we are running attracting the right people? Does the new store window increase our turn-in rate?

  • Take action: Promotional messages to nearby customers; indoor navigation to help them find their way; new product placement to drive cross sales

It was a tall order - and we weren't even sure it could be done – but with a combined team of technology PhDs and retail practitioners, we embarked on a journey to bring the power of online to the physical world.

Five years on, we couldn't be more proud of how close we are to realizing, and in some ways exceeding, this vision. International retailers and property management companies in 22 countries, such as Praktiker, Public, Intersport and CBRE, rely on our solution to optimize their operations. At the same time, it turned out that airports (e.g. San Diego, Munich) and cities (e.g. Waldkirchen, Fellbach) also need a deeper understanding of their visitor behavior, and have already embraced Ariadne’s solution for them.
